Game 25: Rivalry Renewed?

well…*sigh* the Red Sox got swept by the Yankees at home and are now under .500 for the first time this season. This is just not how I envisioned this team. They have a killer offense that we basically haven’t even seen yet, and a pitching staff that’s just straight out awful. At this point, I am not sure what they are going to do, but they better figure it out fast before they slip too far in the standings. It’s only a month into the season but still something needs to be done.

Joe Kelly just didn’t have it yet again last night. It is BEYOND frustrating to see that every single starter in the rotation has an ERA over 4. Let me tell you something, you aren’t going to win games when your starters give up four or more runs EVERY GAME. Of course the Yankees got the offense going early with a Mark Teixeira home run in the first inning, and they really never looked back after that, going up 8-0 at one point.

In the bottom of the sixth, it looked as though the Red Sox offense had finally come alive when they scored 5 runs and got themselves right back into the game. Napoli crushed a 3-run home run into the monster seats, and for a second I thought that the Red Sox might just come back and win this game. Of course I thought wrong.

There was however a little bit of drama in this game between the two AL east rivals. The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry just hasn’t been the same the last few years to me, but last night there seemed to be a spark ignited between these two clubs when Hanley Ramirez was drilled with a pitch by Adam Warren. Ramirez took exception to it and walked very slowly down to first base clearly showing his frustration. Later on the game Edward Mujica intentionally throw at Jacoby Ellsbury on a 3-0 count and he was not pleased. Warnings were then issued to both sides. This was the final game of this particular series, but the Red Sox and Yankees will meet 13 more times in 2015 so it will be interesting to see what happens next. Maybe their rivalry is coming alive again.

The Red Sox will now welcome the Tampa Bay Rays to town to start a 3 game series tonight. It will be Buchholz matched against Jake Odorizzi in the first game of the series. Lets see if Buchholz can make it past the second inning this time. The Red Sox have got to get back in the win column tonight, before they start slipping even more in the standings.

Game 16: Pitchers Duel

The Red Sox seem to be having some bad luck right now. It seems that every time a starter gives a quality outing, the offense can’t muster off any runs and that is exactly what happened in tonights game. Buchholz was marvelous, giving up just 1 run off three hits over six innings. He also struck out 10 and was in complete control. Unfortunately, the Red Sox couldn’t get any offense going against Jake Odorizzi, except for a sacrifice fly by Nava in the second inning.

So… this game turned into a complete pitchers duel until the bottom of the ninth inning of course. The Rays’s Rene Rivera hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth, and we had to watch the Rays jump for joy all over the field. This is definitely a game we should have won and it’s so frustrating when the offense just doesn’t do ANYTHING. (especially with the lineup that we have).

The Sox will now travel to Baltimore to open a three game weekend series with the Orioles. This is the second straight weekend we are playing the reigning AL east champion O’s. Game 1 will be Rick Porcello matched up against Miguel Gonzalez, who we also faced last weekend. Let’s see if the offense can get going.

Game 15: The One That Got Away

The Red Sox SHOULD have won this game, but unfortunately they fell to the Rays 7-5 in last night’s contest. Joe Kelly was absolutely cruising until he hit the sixth inning. From there it all went downhill for the Sox. Up until that inning Kelly had struck out seven and seemed to have the game in complete control, but I guess not. Kelly allowed three straight singles in the sixth inning to load the bases with nobody out, that right there immediately spells TROUBLE. The Sox had a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of sixth thanks to a 2 run shot by LA LUNA Dustin Pedroia, a solo shot by Ortiz, and a couple RBI singles by Napoli and Betts. I thought the Sox were on their way to their 10th victory if the season but I was sadly wrong about that one.

The Rays got four runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 5 and then tacked on two more runs to take a 7-5 lead in the later innings. The Sox unfortunately couldn’t muster out any more offense. I have to say I really can’t stand Edward Mujica. I feel like every time he comes into a game, he either blows a lead, gives a home run, or just does something to mess up the game!!! It is seriously so frustrating to watch.

The Sox will look to win the series in tomorrow night’s finale. It will be Clay Buchholz matched up against Jake Odorizzi. The Sox have yet to lose a series, so let’s keep that trend going.

Game 14: Nail-biter

1-0. That was the final score of last night’s Red Sox-Rays game. These kinds of games ALWAYS have me on the edge of my seat because with one swing of the bat, that lead could be gone. Wade Miley pitched absolutely stellar, allowing just 3 hits and 0 runs in 5 2/3 innings before the bullpen took over. The trio of relievers: Ogando, Ross Jr., and Tazawa held the lead before Koji came in the ninth and closed out the game for his second save of the season.

How did the Red Sox score their run you ask? ON AN ERROR. Seems to be the theme this season but hey I’m not complaining. It was definitely an encouraging sign to see the bullpen hold a lead and for Miley, who recovered from a tough last start. There was no drama however with Archer & Ortiz, but you can definitely tell those two do not care for each other. You never know what’s going to happen with the so-called Sox-Rays rivalry.

Game two of the series will be tomorrow night and going for the Red Sox will be Joe Kelly matched up against Nathan Karns. Let’s hope the Red Sox can keep this tiny 2 game win streak going.

Game 13: Marathon Monday

Marathon Monday- probably one of my favorite games of the entire year. The atmosphere in Boston is truly amazing and I was blessed to be able to attend this years Patriots Day game. My sister’s best friend’s family invited me to come and what a game it was. We sat up in the left field pavilion seats and boy was it cold up there. I was bundled up with a sweatshirt, jacket, and a blanket and was still frigid. I guess that’s what happens when you live in New England.

We only ended up staying until the top of 4th inning because it was brutally cold with the wind and by that time it had started to rain. The rain didn’t seem to bother the Red Sox though as they took advantage of three errors that led to five unearned runs in root to a 7-1 rain-shortened win over the Orioles. I lost track of how many unearned runs the Sox have scored this season, but that just means they are taking advantage of every opportunity that gets thrown their way. Masterson, on the other hand pitched great and it was good to see him in command after his last start in which he gave up 7 runs to the Nationals. What a great win for the city of Boston and the Red Sox.

After the game today, the Red Sox will jet off to Tampa Bay to start a three game series with the Rays. The Rays are sort of an injury depleted team right now, so we certainly need to win games against teams who are sub par so far. Tomorrow nights game will be Wade Miley matched up against Chris Archer. Archer and Ortiz have a little bit of history, so it will be interesting to see if anything happens with that.

Here are a couple of photos from today’s game and festivities.

Game 12: Disastrous Porcello

The reigning AL East champs squashed us again, this time to a crushing 8-3 defeat. Porcello had a terrible start going five innings allowing 8 runs on 12 hits. That is certainly not the way we want him pitching especially because he just signed a long term extension deal with Sox. The pitching has definitely got off to a rocky start, and it leads me to believe that the Sox may need to go out and find a true “ace”.

The Orioles got on the board early with a 2-run home run by Adam Jones in the top of the first inning. Things were looking good for the Sox early though because in the bottom of the first, Hanley Ramirez responded with a 3 run home run of his own to put the Sox on top. That was seemingly the only offense that the Sox could muster off Miguel Gonzalez for the remainder of the game. David Ortiz in the meantime got ejected from the game for arguing a check swing in the middle of his at bat in the fifth inning. It will be interesting to see what happens with that.

Justin Masterson will look to get the Sox back in the win column tomorrow morning in the Red Sox annual 11 AM Patriots Day game. Always one of my favorites. Masterson who will be opposed by Baltimore’s Wei-Yen Chen, will look to rebound from a terrible start against Washington last Tuesday.

Game 11: Bad Luck Buchholz

Buchholz pitched a somewhat quality outing, but the Sox fell to the Orioles 4-1 on this beautiful Saturday afternoon. Chris Tillman completely shut down the Sox offense allowing just 1 run over 5 1/3 innings. The Sox managed just seven hits in the game and 3 were from Ortiz and the other 3 from superstar Brock Holt (who plays just about every position). Buchholz has got to figure out a way to not take so long in between pitches….I swear he made the game an hour longer than it needed to be.

Tomorrow afternoon will be Rick Porcello making his second Fenway start matched up against Baltimore’s Miguel Gonzalez. Hopefully he can get the Sox back in the win column.

Game 10: WALK-OFF

The Sox got their first walk-off win of the season tonight as they beat the Orioles 3-2. The Sox only managed only four hits the entire game, mainly because their bats were silent when Ubaldo Jimenez was on the mound. It wasn’t until Jimenez was ejected in the bottom of the 4th inning for hitting Pablo Sandoval with a pitch off the shoulder. I thought it was extremely odd that he got ejected right away as their were no warnings issued.

Joe Kelly started the game for the Sox and I’d say it was a quality outing for him. His one downfall: pitch count. He was already almost at 80 pitches in the third inning, so that is something he needs to improve on going forward. Like I said before, the offense was quiet tonight, just scoring the two runs over eight innings. The game was tied heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, and Napoli lead off the inning with a walk which is the perfect way to get a rally started. Nava sacrificed him over to second and then the hero of the night Xander Bogaerts delivered the game winning hit in exciting fashion.

Tomorrow afternoon at 4, the Sox and Orioles will square off for Game 2 where it will be Clay Buchholz matched up against Chris Tillman. Buchholz is looking to rebound from his disastrous start last week at Yankee Stadium.

Game 9: Well… At Least We Won The Series

Well, it was only a matter of time before the Nationals offense got going and apparently today was the day. The Nats offense was all over Wade Miley who lasted just 2 1/3 innings in his 2nd start with the Sox. After the Nats got two quick runs in the first inning, the Sox came back in the second and tied it up just like that. But then things got ugly. Miley allowed 6 runs in the 3rd inning to allow the Nats to go on top 8-2. It’s far too early in the season to be concerned with the rotation but there are definitely a lot of speculation of whether or not this rotation can lead the Sox to another World Series victory. It’s only Game 9 so I’m sure as not going to worry yet.

The Sox tried climbing their way back into this one and at point got themselves back into the game when Brock Holt doubled in the bottom of the sixth and made the score 8-5. But of course in the next inning, Tyler Moore hit a 2 run home run to put the Nats back on top 10-5. That was the final score and Sox failed to complete the sweep, but no worries because a series win is just as good to me.

Tomorrow is an off day for the Sox, and then Friday last year’s AL East Champs the Baltimore Orioles roll into town for a 4 game series. Game 1 will be Joe Kelly matched up against Ubaldo Jimenez.

Game 8: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

The Good: The Red Sox won the game 8-7 and have now secured another series win in dramatic fashion. They will go for their first sweep of the season tomorrow afternoon as Wade Miley will make his Fenway Park debut matched up against Gio Gonzalez.  I hope and pray and Xander Bogaerts MRI is clean because he is off to great start this season and there is nothing like an injury to completely diminish your season. Also, KOJI got his first save of the season. I’ve never been so happy to see him back out there throwing strikes.

The Bad: Justin Masterson completely coughed up a 5-1 lead in the 5th inning when he gave up six unanswered runs to the Nats. He seemed to be cruising about a tough first inning, but then was all over the place in the 5th. I guess his return to Fenway didn’t go quite as he had planned.

The Ugly: The Nationals Defense. The Red Sox got 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the lead back 8-7 without the benefit of a hit. Now that’s not something you see every day. The sox scored the runs due to 3 careless errors by the Nats, including 2 on the same play. But hey I’m not complaining because we sure have taken advantage of all these errors the past two games.
